BEing Blog 16 – BEing your Best
I think about peak performance as the gap that is our potential. Our potential is the space between how we are today, and the best we can ever imagine ourselves becoming.
Peak performance demands attention, focus, single mindedness, vigilance, and pinpoint accuracy, EVERYDAY! Peak performance is a decision to be our very best version of ourselves, whether it is in the operating theatre, on the sports field, in the office, and even at home.
In my leadership work, peak performance is at the centre of everything I teach.
Peak performance lives with high quality output, and an ethic of excellence. It relies on astute self-awareness, self-motivation, dogged determination, resilience, and a dose of bloody-mindedness.
While peak performance of an individual or a team can be required in a job description, or by the boss or team leader – it is an individual’s choice, and their decision whether or not to step into the space of potential and move towards being better. Reaching peak performance requires INTENTION.
There are three questions I regularly ask myself and my team when looking at our performance potential. Have a go at answering these for yourself:
Do you want to get better? Have you reached your potential? And have you put a clear plan in place today to get better?
These questions can be asked about every aspect of our lives and our roles as a parent, a partner, an employee, a colleague, or as a boss.
It is interesting that people are very clear about their desire to get better, and that they haven’t yet reached their potential – however very few seem to have put a plan in place to achieve success.
Peak performance doesn’t just happen, it follows a clear intention to get better.
What is your intention to be better than you are today? Write it down.
What is the very smallest baby step you could possibly take today in the direction of your intention? Take this step today, and another one tomorrow, and the next day, and the next.
You are now gaining momentum and moving through your ‘gap of potential’ towards the future version of yourself.
